Victoria Beckham, now a seasoned New York Fashion Week veteran, exuded a relaxed and upbeat energy backstage after her latest show. Carrying her daughter Harper while speaking with journalists, Victoria shared the creative process behind her new collection.
“This season was about taking materials, deconstructing them, then putting them back together,” Victoria explained. “It was about volume and structure, and adding twists.” The collection showcased wool overcoats and dresses with feminine, curved shoulders, along with sweaters and skirts that were draped and rucked, creating a graphic yet sexy silhouette. While Victoria’s signature monochrome was present, the addition of olive, orange, and ochre tones introduced an autumnal warmth to the collection.
“I know I’ve said this many times, but everything is flattering – it’s so important that all of these clothes can be worn,” she continued. “They can go straight from the catwalk onto one of my ladies.”
Victoria mentioned that she doesn’t follow trends, instead focusing on her own design process. “I don’t really follow trends. I develop everything in my two ateliers in Battersea. There are no rules… The word in the studio this season was ‘bounce,’ and that informed our direction.”
For Victoria, the key to her designs is making women feel like the best versions of themselves. “Everything looks great on the body. I know because I try everything on myself.” She reflected on her early days of designing, recalling how she used to stand in front of the mirror, draping fabric on herself. “Thankfully for my team, we have models now,” she joked.
Having opened her first flagship store on Dover Street, Victoria finds it invaluable for understanding her customers. “I spend a lot of time in my shop asking women how the clothes make them feel – what do you like? What don’t you like?” She hinted at an upcoming second store in Asia, though she kept the location under wraps.
Reflecting on her achievements, including winning the British Fashion Award in December, Victoria expressed pride in her journey. “I think I’ve come a long way. I’m really proud of myself and my team. Absolutely everything you see, we have created in my ateliers. We’re now creating substantial pre-collections in five categories, so I’m really enjoying the business. It’s great. I feel really happy and so lucky to be doing something I love.” Congratulations to VB for another successful chapter!
